Quentin Tarantino is known for the quality of his work within the film industry, and despite the passage of time, his productions continue to attract interest and command attention. Released in 2009, Tarantino's WWII epic Inglourious Basterds was both a critical and commercial success. The film has enjoyed stints on several streaming platforms, with its run on Netflix ending on December 1, 2025. However, the darkly comedic war film is still intent on making a name for itself on streaming. Sixteen years after its premiere, the film is quietly climbing digital charts again. According to FlixPatrol, Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds is breaking into the Top 10 of Apple TV Store in a number of countries, including Qatar, and Ukraine.

Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, took a daring approach, setting aside realism and rewriting history through cinematic audacity. The 2009 masterpiece was a reimagination of WWII and focused on a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as The Basterds, led by Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), who sought to strike fear into the Nazi regime by taking several of its soldiers. While the group believes in their mission, it gets quite interesting when they cross paths with a young French cinema owner, Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), who has similar plans, as she seeks revenge for her family’s brutal murder. As previously stated, Inglourious Basterds was a critical and commercial success, with a global box office collection of $321.5 million on a $70 million budget. Its critical reception has remained strong, as the film boasts an 89% Rotten Tomatoes score and 8.4/10 on IMDb.

Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' Is Simply A Masterpiece

Tarantino is no stranger to working with the very best for his productions, and Inglourious Basterds was no different. The WWII film features an incredibly strong ensemble cast that includes Christoph Waltz, Diane Kruger, Michael Fassbender, Eli Roth, Daniel Brühl, and Til Schweiger. The film's reception was also palpable during award season as it garnered eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Waltz's performance as Colonel Hans Landa, one so chilling and articulate that it basically redefined the cinematic villain archetype, was rewarded with an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and the Cannes Film Festival's Best Actor Award as well.

It is clear to anyone paying attention that 2009’s Inglourious Basterds was a defining portion of Tarantino's filmmaking career. The question has often arisen regarding where the film ranks among the director's other works. Oftentimes, the tussle is between the WWII film and the Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. While others have their say, Tarantino has also commented on this issue, highlighting Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood as his favourite and Inglourious Basterds as his masterpiece. Speaking in a podcast interview earlier in the year (via The Church of Tarantino), Tarantino said:

"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is my favorite, Inglourious Basterds is my best. But I think Kill Bill is the ultimate Quentin movie, like nobody else could've made it. Every aspect about it is so particularly ripped, like with tentacles and bloody tissue, from my imagination and my id and my loves and my passion and my obsession. So I think Kill Bill is the movie I was born to make, I think Inglourious Basterds is my masterpiece, but Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is my favorite."

Inglourious Basterds is available to rent on Prime Video.
