3 'Merv' (2025)

Rotten Tomatoes: 36% | IMDb: 5.5/10

22 years after she sang back the Christmas spirit in Elf, Zooey Deschanel is returning to the festive scene with Merv, a rom-com that joins Deschanel with Daredevil himself, Charlie Cox. The movie follows the pair as a split-up couple, Anna and Russ, whose decision to part leaves their beloved dog, Merv, without a spark.

A cute, cozy rom-com with plenty of Christmas spirit, Merv is unlikely to demand any awards attention, but neither does it want to. Instead, this makes for the perfect family viewing the weekend before Christmas. "Whether you're looking for a movie to stream while snowed in and snuggled up with your pup and a cup of hot chocolate, or looking for an inoffensive flick to watch with your grandma who's visiting from out of town, Merv will do the trick," wrote Collider's Nate Richard in his review.

2 'Joker: Folie à Deux' (2024)

Rotten Tomatoes: 31% | IMDb: 5.2/10

One of the newest arrivals on Prime Video this December is a movie so controversial in the 2024 theatrical line-up that many will want to watch it out of sheer morbid curiosity. Joker: Folie à Deux sees Joaquin Phoenix return as the titular nihilistic criminal, now incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital following the events of the first movie. Little does he expect to meet the love of his life, Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga).

There's no hiding from just how disappointing Joker: Folie à Deux was. However, there's still plenty one can enjoy, such as the magnetic performances of both Phoenix and Gaga. Joker: Folie à Deux also boasts some superb cinematography, with director of photography Lawrence Sher turning a problematic script into a selection of often gorgeous visuals. This weekend, for better or for worse, you should definitely give this sequel a try.

1 'The Royal Tenenbaums' (2001)

Rotten Tomatoes: 81% | IMDb: 7.6/10

Christmas is for family, so why not check out one of the most famous and enigmatic movie families of this century? The 2001 Wes Anderson film, The Royal Tenenbaums, follows the titular dysfunctional family as they reunite under the same roof one winter, forced to deal with their many issues.

Anderson at his absolute best, both visually and in emotional detail, The Royal Tenenbaums is a surprisingly tear-jerking tale. The film also boasts a superbly cast ensemble, including the late Gene Hackman in his last great performance, as well as Anjelica Houston, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bill Murray, and Owen Wilson. For a reminder of how normal and friendly your own family is this Christmas, spend some time with the Tenenbaums.
