The movie emerged as an instant classic, grossing nearly $500 million worldwide and instantly being recognized as one of the greatest war films ever made. It was only a few years later that Spielberg and Hanks co-produced the show Band of Brothers, which also happened to be set during World War 2. The series is often ranked among the greatest ever produced, and remains a perennial favorite on home video. It recently witnessed a spike in viewership on Apple TV, along with several other HBO titles.
According to FlixPatrol, Band of Brothers was among the most-watched shows on the domestic Apple TV charts this week, along with fellow HBO titles such as Chernobyl and Generation Kill. Originally released in 2001, the show featured a sprawling ensemble cast that included Damian Lewis, Neal McDonough, Ron Livingston, Donnie Wahlberg, and more. Band of Brothers was critically acclaimed, and is now sitting at a "certified fresh" 94% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the audience score is perched at a near-perfect 97%. The site's consensus reads, "Band of Brothers offers a visceral, intense look at the horrors of war — and the sacrifices of the millions of ordinary people who served."
Tom Hanks Is a Famous WW2 Aficionado
Hanks and Spielberg partnered up on a couple of spiritual sequels to the 10-episode show. In 2010, they released The Pacific, set in a different arena during WW2. And just last year, they released Masters of the Air, which earned excellent reviews and debuted on Apple TV. The Pacific holds an 89% score on RT, while Masters of the Air is currently sitting at an 85% score. Hanks headlined the blockbuster streaming movie Greyhound, which also debuted on Apple TV. He's set to star in a sequel to the film, which depicted naval warfare during WW2 and earned positive reviews for its gripping action sequences.
